What is Kombucha?

Kombucha is a lightly effervescent fermented drink made of yeast, sugar, and fermented tea. While kombucha is made with sugar, the kombucha culture consumes most of it during the fermentation process, which means: less sugar for you. When done fermenting, there is usually about 2-6 grams of sugar per 8 ounce glass of unflavored kombucha (… an 8 ounce glass of orange juice has about 24g of sugar!).

Fermented foods, including kombucha, contain probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria needed for digestion and proper nutrient absorption.

The Ideal Kombucha to Alcohol Ratio

While the kombucha co*cktails below are great, you can use them to inspire you to create your own combination. To experiment with your own kombucha co*cktail recipe use this kombucha to alcohol ratio as a starting point:

1 PART ALCOHOL : 3 PARTS KOMBUCHA

Use slightly less kombucha if you’re using another liquid in the co*cktail, like fruit juice. Play around with kombucha flavors, types of alcohol, and mix-ins like fresh herbs, smashed fruit, and spices.

Lower Sugar Kombucha

As kombucha has become more mainstream, brands have been making their kombucha sweeter and sweeter 😐. I like to look for kombucha that has a maximum of 6-7 grams of sugar per serving. Some brands make flavors with varying sugar content, so check the labels!
