The recipe for making the chocolate covered pretzel rods can be found here. They are so easy to make. It’s a great projects to get the kid’s involved in.

Don’t have time to make chocolate covered pretzels? Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered with some easy swaps you can find at many local stores.

Now let’s jump into creating the perfect Valentine’s Day dessert charcuterie board that will leave a lasting impression.

Valentines Day Dessert Charcuterie Board

The foundation of any charcuterie board is the board itself.

For a Valentine’s Day twist, consider using a heart-shaped board to add a romantic touch.

Alternatively, a rectangular or circular board can work just as well. Ensure that the board is spacious enough to accommodate a variety of sweet treats. I like using a large cutting board with a handle that I have on hand.

Don’t have a cutting board or a platter big enough to use? Why not grab a baking sheet (choose one with an edge) and use it as a charcuterie board. If your baking sheet has discoloration on it from use simply wrap the pan in foil to create a clean surface to build your charcuterie board on.

Ingredients for a Valentine’s Day Charcuterie Board

Here’s what I included on this dessert board:

  • Fresh Strawberries – I used fresh strawberries (wash and dry them before placing on the board) so they can be eaten as is or dipped into the Nutella. You can also swap these out for chocolate-covered strawberries. Around Valentine’s Day you can often find these in your local grocery store. You can also swap out the strawberries for another type of fresh fruit. Choose another red fruit such as raspberries, cherries or even slices of apples.
  • Nutella – use this as a dip. You can also swap this out for chocolate dip or even chocolate hummus.
  • Red Valentine’s M&M candies – or look for other Valentine themed candy such as conversation hearts (multi colored candies imprinted with cute sayings), chocolate hearts or other candies.
  • Chocolate Covered Raisins – I can find a variety of small boxes of “theater” candies in my local Walmart. These boxes are great when you want a small amount of something to use on your dessert boards. Plus everyone loves chocolate covered raisins at my house.
  • Strawberry Twizzlers – red Twizzlers are perfectly colored for this holiday themed board.
  • Pink Rock Candy – these cute rock candy sticks were found in my local Party City store.
  • Strawberry Wafer Cookies – cute, pink and a great addition to this fun charcuterie board
  • Chocolate Covered Pretzels – you can quickly make these chocolate covered pretzels using this recipe.

How to make this Valentines Dessert Charcuterie Board

Where you place your items on the charcuterie board will depend upon you fill your the shape of the board. However, the basics of filling the board are often the same.

Step 1: Start by placing small bowls or small ramekinsthat you are using on the board.

For this board there is a small ramekin filled with the Nutella placed at one corner of the square shaped cutting board. In place of a small bowl I used a paper cup used for baking muffins to hold the M&Ms. I placed this in the center of the board to leave space for the longer pretzel rods.

If you have a larger board you may want to use more than 2 bowls or containers.

Step 2: Place the larger, longer items on the board.

Several of the food items for this board are very long (pretzel rods, Twizzlers, rock candy and wafer cookies). Since these will need the most space you will want to place them on the board before other items.

Depending on the shape of your board, arrange them around the containers that are already on the board.

To make the board appear full allow the ends of some of the items to extend over the edges of the board.

Add in the strawberries in small piles. If you are using a larger sized charcuterie board you may even want to place some of them in a bowl.

Step 3: Fill in the gaps on the charcuterie board with the small candies and even a few strawberries.

Can you make this dessert board ahead of time?

You can make the chocolate dipped pretzels several days ahead of time and keep them stored wrapped in plastic wrap or in a storage bag until you are ready to put the board together.

The board can be put together a 1 to 2 hours ahead of time. However, due to the fresh strawberries you don’t want to make this board a day or two before it’s needed.

Charcuterie Board Tips:

There’s no wrong way to build a charcuterie board. You will want to place the items so the board appears visually balanced and not overly cluttered.

  • Keep color groups together on the board but don’t put the same shade next to each other.
  • Add variety by breaking up colors.
  • Use a variety of textures.
  • Fill in empty spaces with smaller items such as nuts, dried fruit or chocolates. You can even try using sprigs of herbs or even flowers such as real roses to fill in the empty spaces.

What else can I add to this candy board?

If your board has additional space you can easily add in other items such as heart-shaped treats, sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies and other sweet treats.

Or try adding in a small bowl of cream cheese fruit dip for the strawberries.

Why not build a savory grazing board to go with your Valentine’s Day board. Fill a second wooden board with savory foods such as crackers, soft cheese, salami roses and slices of cheese. Don’t forget a a glass of wine round out the way to celebrate the holiday of love!
