Megan Hall Manslaughter

A woman who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a prominent Schuylkill County businessman in a New Orleans hotel room could serve less than eight years in prison after she had the majority of her sentence suspended as part of a plea deal.

Megan Hall, 28, of Munford, Tenn., pleaded guilty to manslaughter, armed robbery and obstruction of justice in New Orleans Criminal Court on Monday, according to court records.

Hall received 25 years for each of the three charges to which she pleaded, but those sentences will run

concurrently, court records show.

The judge also suspended 15 of the 25 years, though that time could be reinstated depending on her behavior while incarcerated.

Hall will also receive credit for almost three years of time served, meaning she could potentially serve less than eight more years.

A count of second-degree murder was amended to the manslaughter charge as part of her plea agreement. If convicted of second-degree murder, Hall would have faced a mandatory life sentence. In Louisiana, second-degree murder is a slaying committed during a felony.

Murphy and his family have operated Murphy Jewelers in downtown Pottsville since 1913. Murphy expanded the business, adding locations in Hamburg and in the Lehigh Valley Mall near Whitehall, Lehigh County.

Hall’s murder trial had been pushed back several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

She is also charged with sexual battery in a separate case and awaits court action on that charge, according to online court records.

According to prosecutors:

Hall stabbed Murphy, 62, once in the neck and twice in the abdomen in a room at the Empress Hotel on Feb. 28, 2019.

A housekeeper discovered Murphy’s body at 11:41 a.m. in a room registered to Hall.

Video surveillance cameras showed Murphy and Hall arriving at the hotel together at 2:10 a.m. Hall was seen leaving the hotel room alone and briskly walking out the front door at 3:42 a.m.

Hotel guests told police that they heard a struggle and a woman yelling around 3:30 a.m.

Murphy had been visiting the city after attending a jewelry convention in Arizona.

When the district attorney’s office was asked by two New Orleans newspapers — theTimes-Picayuneand theNew Orleans Advocate— whether the victim’s family approved of the resolution, prosecutors released this statement:

“Going to trial isn’t for every victim or family. The emotional and mental anguish of seeing the person who has harmed you or your loved one is sometimes too much to bear. In this case, the DA’s office worked closely with the victim’s family, and they urged us to negotiate a resolution with Megan Hall precisely in order to avoid the trauma of reliving their loss in a trial.

“With our office securing the conviction of manslaughter, armed robbery and obstruction of justice via guilty plea, Hall is now facing many years in prison. Her conviction is another example of our office using every tool in our arsenal as prosecutors to ensure that justice is served.”
