FAQs

What is so special about Meyer lemons? ›

The truth is, they're an entirely different breed. Compared to sour Eureka and Lisbon lemons (the varieties you'll find year-round at most grocery stores), Meyer lemons are sweeter and less acidic, with lovely floral undertones.

Can Meyer lemons be substituted for regular lemons? ›

THE BOTTOM LINE: For applications that don't depend on the bracing acidity of a standard lemon, a Meyer lemon can be a fine substitute. But where a recipe demands bold, bright flavor for balance, reach for a standard lemon.

Can a Meyer lemon tree have too many lemons? ›

Be sure to look at the number of lemons you have growing. In order to prevent fruit overbearing, when your tree starts to fruit, you'll want to remove a few lemons in large clusters when they're pea sized. This will promote the growth of larger lemons when they reach maturity.

Can I freeze Meyer lemons? ›

Yes, you can. The method is simple, and the result is fabulous. You'll find many uses for frozen lemons, and you can use nearly every part of the fruit in the process. Freezing lemons means you'll always have fresh lemon on hand to add zip to dishes and tang to drinks.

Can you freeze whole Meyer lemons? ›

When freezing whole lemons, keep them in a food-safe plastic bag, like a Glad® FLEX'N SEAL™ Freezer Bag with as little air as possible. Always wash lemons thoroughly before stashing them away in your freezer. You can also freeze lemon slices to add a spritz of lemon juice to drinks or dishes.

How long does it take for a Meyer lemon tree to bear fruit? ›

As for fruit, the Meyer lemon tree should produce citrus every year after it reaches maturity—i.e., around four years old. Growing a citrus tree on your own may sound daunting—most of us aren't farmers—but we promise it's just as easy as caring for your favorite houseplant (and maybe easier in some cases).

Should you refrigerate Meyer lemons? ›

According to LaMarita, refrigeration is key for keeping your lemons fresh for a long time. "I store my lemons free-standing in the crisper drawer," he explains. "They can easily last a month or more there."

Can you eat Meyer lemons raw? ›

Taste – While they're moderately acidic, Meyer lemons don't have the same tang as regular lemons. Instead, they're much sweeter — so much so that some people enjoy adding the raw segments to their salads or desserts.

Why are Meyer lemons so expensive? ›

Their limited window of availability, coupled with their more fragile nature (which makes shipping them more difficult), naturally makes them more expensive than hardier, year-round regular lemons too.

Why are Meyer lemons more expensive? ›

Meyer lemon season is usually only from winter to early spring in the United States, unlike standard lemons that are available year-round. Because this delicate fruit is only in season from December to May, its price is usually higher than that of Eureka or Lisbon lemons.

What is the common name for Meyer lemons? ›

Citrus × meyeri, commonly called Meyer's lemon, is native to China. It was introduced into the U.S. by Frank Meyer who reportedly found the plant in 1908 near Peking, China. It is believed to be a hybrid cross of C. limon (lemon) and C.

What is the best fertilizer for a Meyer lemon tree? ›

For Meyer Lemon Trees, you want a mix that doesn't skimp on phosphorus or potassium. A balanced 10-10-10 or 14-7-14 mix can work wonders. But remember, too much nitrogen and your tree might go all leafy on you, at the expense of flowers and fruit.

Can you overwater a Meyer lemon tree? ›

To avoid overwatering, use a probe (a long-bladed screwdriver will do) to tell if the soil's dry before watering as overwatering can cause leaf yellowing or leaf drop. To protect the existing fruit, make sure to water at least twice per week until we get significant rains.

Can you freeze whole lemons successfully? ›

Whole lemons will last in the freezer for up to four months. When you're ready to use one, thaw it in cold water for about 15 minutes or microwave it for about 15 seconds, until soft.

How long do Meyer lemons last in the refrigerator? ›

How long lemons last depends on how they're stored. At room temperature, they stay good for about a week. In the fridge, however, their life is lengthened by two to three weeks. That means you can keep store-bought lemons fresh for about one month.

Are Meyer lemons worth it? ›

It really depends on how you're using the lemon. A Meyer lemon is sweeter and translates better in certain recipes, like desserts. If your recipe calls for the bold, acidic flavor of lemon juice or zest, you won't get the same flavor from a Meyer lemon.

Are Meyer lemons good for baking? ›

Impress your guests by using Meyer lemons to add a whimsical twist to your specialty recipes. Whether you're updating your bar's co*cktail menu or baking delicious desserts for your cafe, Meyer lemons can be the sweet and tangy addition to take your creations to the next level.
