Do mushroom growing kits work? ›

If you can find a high quality kit, then yes- absolutely. There are loads of different branded mushroom kits available, and lots of different species of mushrooms you can grow… so it's worth it to do a little bit of research before diving in.

The white layer on your substrate block is mycelium, which is the main part of the fungus that produces your mushrooms! By scraping mycelium on the surface of your substrate, you are stimulating the organism and kickstarting mushroom growth.

Off-odors: A strong, foul odor emanating from the growing containers or growing medium. Abnormal growth: Mushrooms that grow abnormally, such as those that are misshapen or stunted. Presence of molds: The appearance of molds, such as white or blue-green growths on the surface of the mushrooms or growing medium.

How long do mushroom growing kits last? Each grow kit usually lasts for about 2-3 harvests, but this will vary depending on the variety of grow kit you choose. Kits may produce more or less mushrooms in total before they expire and must be replaced.

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests. Once the kit has run out of nutrients and water it will be "spent" and won't produce any more mushrooms.

Cobweb mould looks like, you guessed it, cobwebs! It's fine a wispy or fluffy and a very light grey. It can be easily confused with mushroom mycelium except for its colour. Mycelium is bright white whereas cobweb mould is more grey.

Mycelium is a network of fungal threads that present as white fuzz and can look similar to mold, but is completely safe to eat. We occasionally get questions from folks about seeing “white spots” or “fuzzies” on their mushrooms - don't fear, that's just mycelium!

All good grow kits will come with proper guidance and advice for watering and misting your kits for the perfect growing conditions. 4. Many gourmet mushroom grow kits need light to grow, so keep them in a bright spot away from direct sunlight.

We recommend placing your grow kit on your kitchen bench, out of direct sunlight. This will allow you to check on them daily and serve as a reminder to spray your grow kit regularly to keep humidity high.

Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day.

What is the easiest mushroom kit to grow? ›

Oyster mushrooms are by far the easiest and most reliable mushrooms to grow. For beginners we recommend our Mist & Grow Oyster mushroom grow kits. Simply cut an X in one side of the bag, cover with a humidity tent, and mist a few times daily. Within 7-10 days a cluster of baby mushrooms will appear!

How much does each Mushroom Grow Kit produce? Each Mushroom Grow Kit produces 1-2lbs of mushrooms over the course of 2-3 harvests. The yield depends on the type of mushroom and the growing conditions. The Hazel Phoenix mushroom grow kit will yield the most, as well is the easiest to grow.

Now that you have finished setting up your kit, you will need to place your kit somewhere for it to grow. The best location will be a room where the temperature stays between 15 to 24 degrees C. The ideal fruiting temperature range for Portabella and White Button mushrooms is between 17 to 20 degrees F.
