How do you know when decarboxylation is complete? ›

Put it in the oven and let it bake for 30 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't let it go longer, or you'll risk turning the compound into something else (we'll get to that in a minute). Just like something you would bake, your herb should be golden brown when it is ready.

Generally, the optimal temperature to decarb weed is 104°C between 118°C 220°F to 245°F. You want to apply heat for thirty to forty minutes.

How to decarb faster. If you want to increase the speed of decarbing, increase the temperature. You can decarb in an oven in only ten minutes by increasing the heat to 266° F.

Studies have concluded that cannabis can be properly decarbed within a temperature range of 220-250 degrees, but the decarboxylation temperature for each cannabinoid and terpene varies. For example, THCa requires a temperature of 220 – 240 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 – 45 minutes to complete this process.

If we zoom in to the molecular level, decarboxylation removes a C02 molecule from the cannabinoid. This CO2 turns to a gas and floats away, leaving the cannabinoid slightly smaller. That also means it weighs less. More precisely, it weighs 87.7% of its original weight after decarboxylation.

The only way both processes may overlap is when adding cannabis to a hot drink, like tea. The heat from the hot water will decarboxylate the cannabis while at the same time infusing it into the drink. The process of decarboxylation doesn't happen all at once, so manufacturers must decarb under the correct temperatures for the correct amount of time in order to activate the cannabinoids. Generally, cannabis or hemp is decarbed for around 30-40 minutes at around 230-250 degrees fahrenheit.
